For the first time in its 60-year history, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has introduced women’s special buses in Thane, Bhiwandi and Kalyan.
Kalyan. The facility was launched on October 13.
In a bid to ease the rush hour commute, two trips are reserved for women each day. Two buses leave Bhiwandi for Thane and Kalyan stations at 9 am, and make the trip back to Bhiwandi from Thane and Kalyan at 6.30 pm.
However, it is early days yet, so few commuters are aware of the service. “We have informed several government organisations and zilla parishad schools which have a sizable number of female employees,” said MSRTC spokesperson Mukund Dhus. “We hope many more women will utilise the service.”
MSRTC have deployed their new fleet of big white buses along the route. Even though some may mourn the lost romance of the ST bus, passengers are glad for the convenience of extra seats and more leg room. A few women who took the Bhiwandi-Thane bus on Friday morning were pleasantly surprised to find that the convenient commute had finally arrived at their doorstep.
