Good news for Borivali-Virar residents

Residents between Borivali and Virar who were downcast on hearing that only passenger trains will be plied on the new tracks between the two stations, now have reasons to cheer. The Western Railway plans to run more than 15 trains on the sector this month itself. In fact, even the inaugural date that was fixed as July 7 is likely to be shifted. Says Bhagwat Dahisarkar, Senior PRO, Western Railway, “We have to wait for the report from the CRS (commissioner for railway safety) that is currently inspecting the route.” And confirmation from Rail Bhavan is still forthcoming about whether Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav will preside over the inauguration ceremony.

The 26 km-long additional tracks that have been laid in this corridor as part of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project has been completed six months before schedule, and is expected to ease the commuting woes of thousands of people residing between Borivali and Virar who risk their lives everyday while travelling in the overcrowded locals. Says Willy Shirsat, chairman, Borivali-Dahisar Jagruk Nagrik Manch, “It’s like a dream come true for all of us. We just can’t wait for it to start. But, we have heard that the railways is facing a shortage of rakes, and that only passenger trains will ply first. It will take almost a year for suburban trains to start operations. That’s very disappointing. It’s like showing us a plateful of food and then telling us we can’t eat it.”

“That’s not true,” assures Dahisarkar. “This month itself, the tracks will be operational, and we plan to run more trains on that route.”
