Sir JJ School of Arts

The Sir JJ School of Art building was completed in 1857 at Dr D N Road, Mumbai. In 1866, Higgins and John Lockwood Kipling (father of Rudyard Kipling) began conducting classes in decorative painting, iron work and modeling.

Under Kipling’s guidance, students prepared models for the sculptural details of the University buildings, Victoria Terminus and Crawford Market. Classes in architecture were commenced in 1900 under the advice of John Begg, the first consulting architect to the Bombay Government.
