The American Consulate

About the Consulate

The American Consulate General in Mumbai is located in a building that was originally called Wankaner Palace, built in 1938 by the Maharaja of Wankaner. The Consulate building is situated on the Breach Candy seaface. The Consulate is headed by the Consul General and has a Consular Section, an economic/political section and an administrative office.

The Public Affairs Office is situated in the commercial heart of the city.

The U.S. Commercial Service and the United States Educational Foundation in India are co-located in the Public Affairs Office.

Mayor of Mumbai

The Mayor of Mumbai is the first citizen of the Indian city of Mumbai. He is the chief of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, but his role is largely ceremonial as the real powers are vested in the Municipal Commissioner. He is elected through a popular vote in a quinquennial election. The elections are held in all wards in the city to elect corporators. The party that wins the maximum number of seats holds an internal vote to decide on the mayor.

On February 18, 2005, Datta Dalvi was elected Mayor of Mumbai.
